Poll Shows Evans And Rutinel Locked In Tight Race For Colorado’s 8th District

By Jesse Paul | The Colorado Sun The poll was conducted by a Republican firm on behalf of a conservative political nonprofit that doesn’t reveal its donors and is backing Evans, the district’s Republican incumbent. The race between Republican U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans and his Democratic challenger, former state Rep. Manny Rutinel, is essentially tied with just a few weeks before voters in Colorado’s toss-up 8th Congressional District start receiving ballots, according to a recent poll. The poll was conducted by a Republican firm — McLaughlin and Associates — on behalf of Enhancing American Competitiveness, a conservative political nonprofit that doesn’t reveal its donors and is backing Evans. Colorado Redistricting Measure Attracts $250K From National GOP PAC

By Jesse Paul | The Colorado Sun Dark money groups are financially backing Amendment 86, which aims to make it harder to redraw congressional districts outside of the normal census-driven process. A federal political action committee created by U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson is bankrolling a Colorado ballot measure this year that would make it more difficult to redraw the boundaries of the state’s congressional districts outside of the process already laid out in the state constitution. The American Revival PAC gave $250,000 in August to the Fair Redistricting Colorado issue committee, which is working to pass Amendment 86 in November. The leadership PAC was created by Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, in 2017. It’s funded by other political action commi...

Colorado Voter Registration Is Underway Ahead of Nov. 3 Election

By Justin George | The Colorado Sun Coloradans have until Oct. 26 to register for a mail ballot ahead of the Nov. 3 election, but same-day registration is available through Election Day. It’s National Voter Registration Day, and Colorado voters have multiple ways to register before Election Day on Nov. 3. How to register To register to vote in Colorado, people must provide their Colorado driver’s license number, the last four digits of their Social Security number or present another valid form of identification to their county clerk and recorder’s office or the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office. If the form of ID doesn’t confirm someone’s citizenship, a person must affirm under penalty of perjury that they are a U.S. citizen. To receive a ballot in t...

Democrat Jessica Killin’s Attack Ads Mischaracterize Crank’s Wedding Gift Waiver

By Jesse Paul | The Colorado Sun Democrat Jessica Killin is running to unseat Republican US Rep. Jeff Crank in the 5th Congressional District. She would be the first Democrat to represent the district. Democrat Jessica Killin, who is running to flip Colorado’s 5th Congressional District this year, launched her first attack ads against Republican U.S. Rep. Jeff Crank, both of which feature a misleading claim about the Colorado Springs congressman. The narrator in the pair of 30-second spots claims that Crank asked for a special waiver “allowing him to take gifts from his lobbyist buddies behind closed doors” and “without disclosing them.”  There are some big asterisks behind those assertions.  Crank did apply for a gift...

Rutinel is challenging Republican U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans in the 8th Congressional District north of Denver. Evans narrowly won the seat two years ago, defeating Democratic U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo. Colorado’s Citizen Initiative Process Faces Growing Influence From Deep Pockets

By Colleen Slevin | The Colorado Sun High cost of getting a measure on the ballot has given wealthy interests more power to push their agendas. Colorado loves its ballot questions, ranking among the top states for the most on the ballot. But voters also like to say no — a lot. In the over 100 years that Colorado voters have been able to petition to put questions on the state’s ballot, only 36% of the 256 questions that made it on the ballot have passed, according to a tally by the state legislature. Questions referred to the ballot by state lawmakers have done better, passing nearly 60% of the time. Between 1960 and 2024, Colorado had the third highest number of voter-initiated ballot measures, behind California and Oregon, according to John Mat...

Colorado Graduated Income Tax Proposal Heads to Signature Review

By Marianne Goodland | Colorado Politics The measure, which eliminates Colorado’s flat tax, is expected to raise $2 billion in new revenue The proposal to amend the Colorado constitution to change the state’s flat rate into a graduated income tax came in under the wire Monday, the deadline for groups to turn in petition signatures for November’s ballot, setting up a high-stakes battle over revenue. Backers of the graduated tax proposal — which would marginally decrease the tax liability for the lower ends of the new bracket, while raising taxes for others — turned in 157,000 signatures with about an hour to go before the 5 p.m. deadline. The proposal, if approved at the ballot box, is expected to generate $2 billion more in tax revenue for the state. Doze...

Independent Candidate Enters High-Profile Congressional Race Against Socialist Melat Kiros

By Ernest Luning and Mark Samuelson | The Denver Gazette      Unaffiliated congressional candidate Shimon Blau, a Denver doctor, has qualified by petition for the general election in Colorado’s 1st District, where Democrat Melat Kiros defeated 15-term U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette in last month’s primary, the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office said Friday. Blau, a newcomer to politics, submitted just shy of 2,000 valid signatures on July 8 days after starting his petition drive in response to Kiros’s upset primary win over DeGette. Election officials said 1,918 of the 2,212 signatures gathered by Blau were accepted, easily clearing the 1,500 signature requirement. Shimon Blau, who qualified to run for the 1st Congressional Distri...

Colorado Socialist Nominee Calls for More Immigrants to Hold Public Office

By: Chris Bradford | New York Post The anti-Israel Gen-Z socialist who ousted 15-term Colorado rep Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) has called for more immigrants to be elected into office so America’s “exploitative” role on the world stage can be combated. Ethiopian-born Ph.D student Melat Kiros – who wildly claimed the elimination of Israel isn’t antisemitic – told Denver’s Wa-Ela Tigray diaspora gathering earlier this month there needs to be “more people who have heritage in the global south.” Kiros, a member of the radical Democratic Socialists of America, spoke about the challenges of being an insurgent candidate before warning those already in power they have a responsibility to make it easier for their successors when it comes to running for office. ...
